We all know him. He’s a favorite of many people. But he’s my favorite for his talent. He plays gangster John Dillinger. He stars alongside Marion Cotillard and Christian Bale (a longshot). His turn in Sweeney Todd earned him his first Golden Globe win after 7 nominations. His first nomination was for the 1st Pirates of the Caribbean. Though overwhelmed, expect him to be a dark horse.

The young actress has accomplished so much. Reviews have praised her memorable performance and is a front runner for a nomination. She tied for the supporting performance award with Mo’Nique at TIFF. She stars alongside George Clooney and Vera Farmiga as a young airport employee. The film once again proves why Jason Reitman has a talent for bringing accolades to young stars (remember Ellen Page from ‘Juno’?).

In Precious, Mo’Nique plays the mentally ill mother of a Harlem teen. She claimed the Sundance acting prize and earned heaps of acclaim for her first dramatic role. After all of the films she has starred in, I never knew she was capable of a performance like this. Watch the trailer to see what I’m talking about. As of now, she is the one to beat for the Supporting Actress award.

This is a breakout role for him. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a greeting card writer in search of true love. He gave a believable performance throughout, and is a possible actor for a nomination. Watch the film if you haven’t seen it. He has great chemistry with Zooey Deschanel.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt delivered a breakthrough performance as the guy in love in (500) Days of Summer.

Jeremy Renner is earning raves for his perfomance as a bomb squad leader in The Hurt Locker.

Robert Downey, Jr. is a double contender for Sherlock Holmes and The Soloist, in which he plays a Los Angeles reporter.

Hugh Dancy is authentically Aspergian and believable in Adam.

Sam Rockwell plays an astronaut effectively in Moon.

George Clooney is strong as a frequent flyer in Up in the Air.

Matt Damon comically embodies a soon-to-be agricultural agent in The Informant.

A gay teacher is embodied by Colin Firth in A Single Man, who won the Golden Lion award in Venice.
